THE WORKSHOPS

Intensive Workshops

The residency is best organised in partnership with a venue or centre.

Residency to performance or prior to the Company performance

This is a popular model. We ran a residency at the Royal Festival Hall in August 2002 with debates on touch, open workshops for any age to drop in, children's workshops, and a professional dancers/practitioners' workshop. Members from the community workshops that we ran with SENSE (prior to the residency and during it,) performed with us on the Friday lunchtime work in process performance. The company performed again in the evening. There are many versions of this model according to the participants, and purpose. It serves to build audiences for the performances and affirm dance as an accessible participatory art form.

A Workshop designed by ourselves in Manchester or a residency at a venue

This model provides an opportunity to work with a company member or sometimes with a guest teacher. The purpose can be either to work on material to be developed further towards a performance, or more skills based processes to widen the palette of methods towards making improvised dance, that can be integrated into our own practise. The week intensive offers a networking opportunity for the participant dance artists, it provides a chance to collaborate and make alliances as there is a lot of time to converse and practise with peers. The participants are most often a diverse group of people from the local community and people from different parts of the country or from abroad. Examples; 1. A week in March 2005 with Julyen Hamilton, which included an open day for other dancers to join us and an opportunity for invited guests to watch us working; or 2. A summer week intensive at Zion Arts Centre (2003) for disabled and non disabled dancers to work with contact improvisation and scores.
